SUMMARY:Weaving Community Together; A Bioregional Mapping Exercise

First six to RSVP will come! \n\n\n\nDetails of the day and location will be sent after registration. \n\n\n\n\nIf you are interested and not able to come\, stay tuned for information and opportunities after July 17th! \n\n\n\nYou are invited to a unique and special Bioregional Mapping workshop in service of regenerating Whatcom!   \n\n\n\nRegeneration is what nature\, when in balance\, does – keeps the whole system (in this case\, a bioregion) in balance so that all living things can thrive.  Our living systems are out of balance.  A strategy to return these living systems to balance\, to regenerate\, must come from an understanding of the whole – the watersheds\, ecosystems\, histories\, relationships\, cultural memory\, stewards that shape the landscape\, along with the roads\, political lines\, economies and more.   \n\n\n\nIt asks more than where things are. It asks how things are in relationship with each other\, what has happened here\, what is healing\, and what this place needs next — not from a particular perspective of a group or species\, but from a holistic\, systemic perspective.  This is what we call a “bioregional” perspective.  \n\n\n\n\nBioregional Mapping is a way to weave together and make visible for “better action”\, local\, traditional and scientific knowledge.  It draws its power from the community coming together. It  is a key step in a layered analysis of our “bioregion” and watershed in service of creating a strategy for regenerative projects and funding. Bioregional Mapping has a long history in Cascadia and the regeneration movement\, starting back in the 1970’s.  You can learn more here! \n\n\n\nWe will focus on the Nooksack River watershed and surrounding areas and work through a series of exercises to “map” things such as places we love or value; water\, soil\, forests\, ecosystems (healthy and damaged); human activity such as food production\, sources of pollution\, urban growth\, loss of farm fields\, resource extraction; and  where regeneration is happening and who is doing it.  Through the day we will discover connections and relationships\, harvest insights and more.    \n\n\n\nThe workshop will run from 9:00am to 4:00pm\, with time for a spacious catered lunch.   \n\n\n\nThis workshop is the first step in building the knowledge needed.  Please consider joining us to lend your unique knowledge\, perspective and love for this land.  We anticipate a series of “mapping” workshops will be needed to build the layered knowledge necessary for a robust regeneration strategy.

DESCRIPTION:Come join as we visit 3 neighborhood Earth Repair Projects: \n\n\n\n\nThe Oasis Collective Home Food Forest Garden\n\n\n\nThe Back 40” WWU’s living water purification ponds andJeff’s Sequoia Forest\n\n\n\n“The Outback Farm” WWU’s Fairhaven Forest garden and permaculture plantings\n\n\n\n\nFriday July 31st\, 2026 5-7pm \n\n\n\n\n\nMeet behind Buchanan Towers Dormoff of Bill McDonald Parkway and 25th St.\, South Bellingham. \n\n\n\nWe will begin our tour walking through WWU’s “Regional Ponds” natural treatment project to clean their parking lot run-off stormwater. We can also witness the transformation of these public lands towards a Sequoia giganteum climax forest. \n\n\n\nWe will then visit the Oasis Food Forest Garden. This small urban yard of a collective living home has been tended by a variety of community permaculturalists and gardeners over 20 years. Come see a productive urban food forest and enjoy a locally harvested snack. \n\n\n\nAfter that we will return to campus and visit the 50+ year old Outback forest garden\, a maturing and evolving food forest. \n\n\n\n\nThe whole journey will be about a half mile leisurely walk. Meet other interested earth stewards and share ideas about making urban spaces more fertile and diverse.
